Daisuke Ikeda & Takahiro Oba v. Makoto Hashi & Kengo Mashimo (FUTEN - 10/24/2010) Maybe my favorite match of the decade. It's the SC 2010 MOTY and the pinnacle of FUTEN segundacaida.blogspot.com/2017/01/2010-match-of-year.htmlReally fun performances by Oba and Mashimo, and one of my favorite finish runs of all time, with Ikeda and Hashi liquifying each others brains with grotesque headbutts. Ikeda is an all time great and this match maybe his peak

Best match of the 2010s so far. Ridiculous violence + high end matwork + comedy + epic storytelling. Top 30 likely.

A classic final stand off that needs to be seen by all. If you are a fan of the style I can't see this not ranking for you. If you like uncomfortable levels of violence I can't see this not ranking for you. An incredible performance by Ikedia and Hashi.

Rewatched this today since I figured it'd pop up and man, what a match. I'm not 100% sure it'll make my list because it's sort of inconsistent (mostly on Oba's end, obv) but it's got a sort of variety that most matches nominated so far doesn't have. The finishing stretch is incredible stuff and if I'm feeling like my list is a little one note when I'm putting it together, this could sneak on.

Incredibly enthralling yet also incredibly disturbing match. Seriously, the number of headbutts in this match is disgusting. And yet...this is still a tremendous tag match. When you take into consideration the other factors of this match: the length, the psychology, the violence, the grappling, and the will to prove that you're better than your opponent, this is indeed one of if not THE pinnacle of the BattlArts style.

Is it possible to hate shoot headbutts in wrestling and yet love this match? I think that's where I'm at.
Generally I hate those spots (e.g. in Shibata-Okada for a high profile example). They generally look worse than a worked punch while being legitimately dangerous and I want to scream out "You don't have to do this!"
So this match is pretty harrowing, with the central narrative built upon long headbutt exchanges. Hashi is able to rock Ikeda with them so of course Ikeda tries to fight back in the same way because ...Ikeda. Even for a Futen match it all seems a bit much. But then Oba is there goofing around working fun comedy spots and you think surely this is going to be OK. Ikeda can't actually die in the ring with this lovable, oversized child there watching on. Surely the world cannot be so dark. I can't understand the earnest words of encouragement Oba is shouting to Ikeda from the apron, but I imagine it's something like "You can do it Daiske! You're the best! Just watch out for those headbutts, they look bad, you should maybe try and avoid some of those." as Hashi destroys him with the twentieth brutal headbutt in succession.
Anyway, the drama in the final section is off the charts. Hashi is perfect as the monster sensing danger too late and trying to process his unexpected vulnerability and Ikeda is otherworldly playing against type as the heroic underdog babyface fighting to the last.
