Kiyoshi Tamura vs Yoshihisa Yamamoto (RINGS – 9/21/1998) This is a great match but is in the “second tier” of great Tamura matches. Which means I have it ranked 29th overall on my rough draft list. Sooooo, yeah. I’m going to have a lot of Tamura matches ranked really fucking high. This is exactly what you think. Awesome shoot style match with great striking and some of the greatest mat work ever in a wrestling ring.

Just finished this and I loved it so I think it deserves to be checked out by everyone. The more I watch of Tamura and RINGS, the more and more I love it. This was a fantastic match with tons of struggle over strikes and submissions which I love. The drama and showing of exhaustion by Tamura towards the end was masterful and the panic that was coming around as he was racking up slots against him. I've always believed that shoot style was almost a more logical progression of what the early 20th century wrestling was supposed to be.

Yammamoto's fire here is MAGNETIC. Tamura kinda underrated his opponent first it seems, but damn he got his ass kicked both at the mat and exchanging strikes. He nearly survived this onslaught. Awesome action full of dramatic moments, Tamura was great as always but this is Yammamoto's show to me.

There's a subtle arrogance about Yamamoto. He seems like he's getting a lot out of slapping Tamura in the face, and the crowd naturally starts rooting for Tamura. Yamamoto is dangerous on the mat and can hold for hold with Tamura. All the action on the mat was super smooth and fluid. Yamamoto even busts out Tamura's old rival Volk Han's calf slicer submission in an attempt to tap out the ace of RINGS. There were plenty of big strike exchanges to be found here and watching Tamura fire up and make his comeback had the fans going mental. I don't think this reaches the highs of Tamura/Kohsaka, but it's a damn fine match regardless. ★★★★½

I heard good things about this match and I did not think it could reach the heights that Kohsaka vs Tamura from 6/27/98 did, but I was wrong. This was incredible. A mature Yamamoto comes out swinging against Tamura and doesn't pull any palm strikes, to say the least. Tamura is in the fight for his life here. Yamamoto doesn't meet Tamura's skillset on the mat, although he is very good, but pushes Tamura to the brink with his striking game and stand-up. It appears Yamamoto controls the match from about 10 minutes on as he gives everything he has to finally defeat his nemesis, but Tamura's conditioning pays off and he gets Yamamoto back down to the mat several times to regain control. After Yamamoto makes a few desperate rope escapes, Tamura finally catches him with a reverse guillotine choke and gets the victory. This was a true war, and it gave me goosebumps. A surefire sign of a RINGS classic. *****
