One of my Fives
Austin is at his absolute peak here, that neck surgery appears to have done him a lot of good (or at least for the next year or two) as he's an absolutely unrelenting force of nature with an actual arsenal of moves up his sleeve compared to 1998/99. The match has been built as the blowoff to a feud where the two literally almost killed each other and had to sign a contract promising no contact until this match as their constant fighting was causing havoc up and down the Fed. So naturally the match starts with Austin storming the ring and unloading a bunch of rights on Triple H. No lockups here.
The first fall would be a classic 12 minute match in its own right. Really intense brawl with Austin's working Hunter's arm and Hunter targetting the knee in between all the kicking and punching. So much hatred it's intoxicating and the crowd is hot for everything. Considering this is first fall is meant to be straight wrestling and the second a Street Fight this is incredibly chaotic and violent.
But by the 2nd fall they somehow manage to escalate things further. Austin drags Triple H to the steel ramp and suplexes him hard onto it. Twice. Ouch. Then he drags him to the announce tables and bashes his head with a monitor and starts throwing chairs into the ring. Triple H cowardly tries to flee but Austin is a man possessed and aint letting him go nowhere and gives him the most unholy beat down on the outside with a chair. Seriously take notes here wrestlers on how to inflict an asskicking. Austin takes a quick break to drink a can of beer before smacking Hunter in the head with it! If it was anyone else this would be mood-breaking comedy but with Austin it all feels so natural. He's just genuinely having the time of his life with all this carnage.
The 3rd fall is a steel cage match. Here things slow down a bit as they're both selling exhaustion from the previous two falls, and naturally this is the shortest of the three. Hunter has his trusty sledgehammer to hand and Austin has his 2x4 wrapped in barbed wire. They both just beat the hell out of each other more with every breath of energy they have left until they both have nothing left to give and they both collapse with Hunter landing on top of Austin. The finish is a fluke. I loved it.
Near 40 minutes of hate-filled bloody mayhem between two guys so determined to maim one another that they both collapsed of exhaustion before either was willing to stop. One of the greatest depictions of a blood-feud ever.
