Kenny Omega vs. Tetsuya Naito (NJPW G-1 Climax-8/13/2016)
A precursor to their match the next year in the finals, this is my pick for best match of 2016. This was really the match that proved Kenny could compete at the highest level imaginable. Some absolutely incredible offensive sequences and the urgency and desperation is evident in almost every step of the way. Some minor criticisms would be the legwork done to Kenny which doesn’t affect his ability to hit the V-Trigger, but if you look closely you’ll see he’s actually using the other leg to hit it.
Definitely makes the list.

Very seldom in my 25 years of watching pro-wrestling did I think I was watching the best match ever, or something to that effect. I don't think I've considered much more (if that much) than ten match ever reaching the infamous ***** rating. When I saw the comments in that thread, I was very doubtful to say the least. As much as Omega showed me if could be a great worker, he also showed way too much goofiness on day to day. I expected a great match, counting on Naito to work the same brilliance he already showcased and Omega reigning down his bad instinct. Nope. This is one of the best match I have ever seen. Both were absolutely awesome. The build, the selling, the moves (yeah, fuck a gazillion punches in the ass with a barbwire bat), the escalation, the drama, the body language. Yep. This one I'd give the ***** rating. MOTY. Pro-wrestling can be so great. It's rare, but when it happens, i's beautiful.

Won't make my list but this is a top 5 match for 2016 and the match that sold me on Kenny Omega. Truly sublime knee selling. Great action, character work and escalation.

One of the best matches I had seen in 2016 and with a rewatch today it confirms just how good this was. I am not sure if I like the 2017 G1 final match better but they are both very close. The crowd is very invested and loving every second which makes for great environment. This was a great match surrounded by a great G1 tournament in 2016. The big Omega mega push became clear during this match. Omega as a star in NJPW was cemented during this match. Corino on commentary was great towards the closing stretch of this match. It came down to the wire and time was closing in quickly as Corino is losing his mind. Great stuff all around. Kenny tries "heeling" on the crowd after the match but it doesn't work. Funny stuff and classic Kenny promo after.

Nobody has talked about this match here in 5 years.
The two biggest dicks in the world are trying to out-dick each other.
Where do NJPW fans see this match ? This feels like something that stands out from the pack & will always hold up.

One of the absolute best matches of all time and a pretty important one for our current generation, all things considered.

I understand why folks would be into this one but it's not really my thing. I will say while I usually find the average NJPW big main event from this era to be just kinda boring. This definitely isn't boring there's just way too much of it for my taste.
I just like wanna watch Superstar Graham work a bearhug or watch Dick Murdoch build a half a match around landing one punch.
