An out of nowhere classic for me. The hate, mean streak and competitive drive are all on point. Biting and hair pulling. Great character dynamics and superb selling down the stretch.

I still maintain this is an overlooked classic from 97 that would likely run away with MOTY honors if it happened today. Hierarchy based title match as Hokuto is out to humiliate her younger challenger while Kaoru fights tooth and nail. Good mix of the usual joshi action with some limb psychology and ultra aggressive, vicious exchanges.
There was debate about the opening sequence on PWO with regards to the role of no selling in wrestling. Kaoru hits three big bombs in a row but Hokuto just yanks her down as she sets up another one and angrily throws the title at her on the ground as if to say "You think that's good enough to take this?". Good storytelling and it shows selling isn't black and white. It's also interesting that the arm stuff isn't limb work per se. It's more that Kaoru grabs an armbar and wrenches it in nasty fashion, leading to a long term injury that is sold well.

This is on the Gaeaism channel on YouTube now for anyone who wants to watch. I don’t have much to add to micro’s comments except to say I lean toward his view of the match. Thought it was laid out well and both wrestlers did a good job.

Really glad I finally got round to watching this. To me, Hokuto no-selling at the start of the match really helps to emphasise the accumulated damage down the stretch when she sells her arse off.

Yeah, I watched this a couple weeks ago. I thought it was a really good match, structured well and emphasized both wrestlers strenghts. I mean, Hokuto is so good all around that basically "wrestling" is her strength, but still. Kaoru is someone I need to watch a bit more of. I LOVE her famous match with Aja, but outside that match and this I am not sure I have seen her much.

It's always struck me as a very very very good not quite great match. But definitely worth watching
