Chigusa Nagayo vs. Akira Hokuto (AJW @ Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan - 3/19/1989)
Chigusa Nagayo would start her original retirement later that year (back in those days, AJW forced their wrestlers to retire before the age of 26). This was possibly the first great singles match of Akira Hokuto’s career. She gave a strong showing. Great selling and facials. She also showed great determination. One of Hokuto’s strongest points was the ability to add more of a dramatic feel to her matches and this match indicates she was already capable of doing so back in those days. Chigusa Nagayo gave a great performance as well. She was great in her role as the biggest joshi puroresu star ever. The school girls in attendance were incredibly loud, which was usually the case back then (especially when Chigusa was having a match). The matwork was intriguing. They made things look like a struggle and they showed a lot of intensity.

Second. Great young star vs. established veteran match. Awesome Hokuto performance, full of urgency and focus, with a really good selljob of her bad leg. Another to add to Chigusa's 80s resume.

This match is terrific. Chiggy played her role pretty well, but Hokuto's performance is incredible: the execution, the facial expressions, selling, the tenacity... Very interesting clash of personalities, with a nuclear AJW crowd and tremendous nearfalls (most of them based on quick pin attempts, not bombs). A great match in a year full of great matches.

Really good match, with a really great finishing stretch, Chigusa demonstrates her versatility and Hokuto shows all those things (tenacity, facial expressions, desperation) at an early stage.

This was really good. I watched it mostly to get an impression of Chigusa's late 80s run, and I thought she was good in it, but I came away thinking more about Hokuto, which is something I've done a lot of recently. This is the highest I've ever been on her and the way she went after Chigusa from the start here was great. Whenever Chigusa started mounting any offence Hokuto was rabid trying to prevent her control slipping away against someone who could clearly shred her with kicks. There was one point where Chigusa tried to slap on a choke, really ripping her forearm across Hokuto's face like she was trying to take her head clean off, and Hokuto IMMEDIATELY shot for the ropes like her life depended on it. Did Hotta mould herself after Chigusa? Because this felt like the earliest Yumiko Hotta performance I've seen. Holy smokes was she over to a quite frankly stupid degree. I didn't realise there were still so many young girls in the audience this late in the 80s but they lived and died with Chigusa.

Good match. I've never been super high on it relative to others but it's really good.
