I'm new to this whole project thing and trying to watch matches with an objective and thoughtful eye. I'm only 21 years old and have watched wrestling since 2005 and I want to be as fair as possible to matches before I started to watch wrestling. I like many of you have standards and expectations going into a wrestling match. I feel as if I can't watch older stuff with measured expectations for the time. I mainly have this issue watching 70s and 80s matches and I fear that I won't have strong representation of matches pre 1990. Is this a fair feeling to have? Am I downplaying my ability to consume these matches?

I would answer yes to the last two questions you asked. It is completely fair to have those feelings. To be honest, I am much more likely to hear someone out who is honest about these kinds of struggles and who works hard to think through them. At the same time, you are probably not giving yourself enough credit. I struggle with this any time I work my way into a new style or time period.
For me - and this may or may not work for you - its important to let yourself get a feel for the style and time before making too many judgements. I find in most styles (including older styles) there is SOMETHING in there for just about anyone if you wade through it a bit. I start, often, with the pimped stuff. I'll dive right into the deep end and see what the stuff that other people think is the highest form of a style offers me. Usually that helps me see what they are getting up to sets a bar of sorts as I explore the style/time a bit more. Sometimes I find stuff I like more, sometimes I don't. Regardless, once you sort of dive into a style the grammar of that style, how it is organized and how it communicates will start to make sense to you. I prefer to go immersion for a bit when getting into something that is kind of new until I really think I am starting to get it.
Don't be afraid to ask people for recommendations based on your tastes too. Maybe some of the title classics for the 70s and 80s aren't your thing, but maybe there is some nifty matches that are a bit more pacy that you would like. Maybe you would like brawls more. Maybe there was stuff in Japan or Mexico that translate better for you. Ask around if you are having trouble, sample lots of different stuff. The thing that was overwealming to me when I really upped my fandom and started seeking out more footage was just how much there is, even pre-90s. Its just more than I could ever really hope to get through.
I also try to appreciate a match for what it is, not what I want it to be. I'll get caught up by the intensity of the crowd during the 70s and 80s and that makes the action that much more meaningful and then I can start to see what people are really digging, what the wrestlers are focusing on, the stories they are trying to tell.
My final piece of advice would be to be honest with yourself. Look, if you really give 70s and 80s wrestling a shot, an honest effort, and you just don't like it... well, you just don't like it. That is fine. People will probably complain, but who cares. If you can make a thought out and detailed case that shows you did your homework and it just isn't your thing the vast majority of people will understand.
