1990-08-19 Bull Nakano & Grizzly Iwamoto vs. Aja Kong & Bison Kimura (AJW @ Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan)
A very brutal and stiff joshi puroresu tag team match. Bull Nakano was the most dominant wrestler in joshi puroresu at the time. One of the most memorable matches of the year 1990.

Thirded, absolutely. Sort of like if Onita and Goto vs. Dragon Master and Kurisu was 20 minutes longer and had slightly more structure. One of the most insane, chaotic, and violent matches I've ever seen. It also comes off as one of the most realistic with how exhausted everyone clearly is because they're legitimately dragging and clobbering each other. The post-match is terrific as well, with Bull and Aja driving each other to tears.

Watched this again cuz Boss bumped the thread and I've been talking a bunch about Bull lately. One thing that really stood out to be after watching it again sis how awesome Iwamoto are Kimura are just stiffing the fuck out of each other. The promotion is building towards Bull vs Aja & that's what the fans want to see and Bull vs Aja deliver. But this is a 30min long tag match so Bull vs Aja isn't going to happen the whole time. Grizzly & Bison are in their stiffing the beejeesus out of each other & getting destroyed when in against Bull or Aja so badly that you don't mind when its not a Bull vs Aja match up in there. Thats an impressive feat to pull off.

I actually watched this earlier and the Iwamoto/Bison exchanges were pretty easily my favourite parts of the match. They absolutely leathered each other and I don't know if I've ever seen nastier shots with a kendo stick. At one point Bison about took Grizzly's ear off with a home run hit. None of the kendo stick shots from anyone looked like your standard pro-wrestling kendo stick shots. These were reckless as fuck and everyone was getting cracked in the neck, the elbow, the ear, back of the head, thigh -- it was welts for days. The bit where Aja and Bison were laying into Bull with the sticks as Bull stood and absorbed it all felt a wee bit hokey to me, but I jumped into this cold without watching anything from the Aja/Bull feud leading up to it, so maybe it'd resonate more with better context (I mean, I get the context from having read about it and all that, but it's not really the same as actually seeing it unfold).

I love Bull no selling the kendo stick shots. This is what Ohtani's Jacket had to say about it on PWO:

I agree a bit with Bull no-selling the kendo stick shots was a cool visual but a bit ridiculous, but it was always more of a nitpick and I think the explanation of Aja not having the power and rage yet helps it.

Tbf, I don't necessarily think hokey is a bad thing. Like, the Ultimate Warrior staring at his hands in disbelief before looking to the heavens because his alien gods have abandoned him after Savage kicks out of the big splash is hokey. It also happens to be the single greatest moment in the history of our great sport.

It also happens to be the single greatest moment in the history of our great sport. I agree with all of this, especially the points about Warrior. I would just add about the kendo stick spot that it also makes sense on a more basic level than what OJ said. Jungle Jack just wasn't hitting Bull very hard with the kendo sticks. Bull was the Ace. The World Champ, The #1, The toughest women's wrestler in the world. Everyone could see they weren't hitting her very hard. It would have looked like shit & made her look bad if Bull was selling those weak shots. Her no selling those shots before taking a stick and literally breaking it in half over everybody's head isn't just a cool/memorable spot it works as a storytelling device. Not unlike Warrior talking to his hands. I guess I would say I actively like Bull's no selling the kendo sticks before breaking them over everyone's head.

I absolutely loved Bull in this match from the no selling of the kendo stick shots to the disdain and brutality toward Bison to the t-shirt you may have found in an teen mvz at the time. These kendo stocks shots and some of the shots with relief chairs looked so dangerous. Thought they meandered just a bit toward the end but I was enthralled throughout.

Bumping this because it's another one that I would think people here would really dig & vote for.

This is a kick-ass brawl even if it missed my list. Rarely do the seconds get more of the attention than the main combatants so this is special just for that.
