El Hijo del Santo vs Espanto Jr (UWA - 04/10/1988) Another classic match from one of the most underrated rivalries in wrestling history. Their Apuestas match from 1986 is more highly regarded, but this still finished #10 overall in the DVDVR 80s Lucha set rankings. The awesome thing about this match in comparison to the 1986 iteration, is that this is a title match and is thus worked completely differently. Gone is the violence and in its place is the gorgeous, balletic mat work that make Lucha Title matches the best of all title match styles. This is spectacular. Espanto Jr is one of the forgotten great wrestlers of the late 80s/early 90s.

I will second. These matches always seem to fall under the radar when compared to the other higher profile Santito feuds, but these matches are tremendous. I am realy looking forward to watching this and the apuestas again.

Third. I was blown away by this. Loved their apuestas match, but this one is even better to me 'cause it has one of the best matworks I've ever seen, incredible action (I'll remember to death that Espanto bump on the corner in the primera caída, just holy fuck), a legendary crowd and a great climax with a clever finish. The chemistry between this two is something else, Lawler/Dundee or Misawa/Kobashi levels.

Pleasantly surprising match. The finish is thrilling because there are loads of nearfalls, it's difficult to figure out the winner. ****1/4

I loved this so much. The closing stretch of the second fall and Santo’s selling brought this to another level. And they maintained it throughout an insanely good third fall. Plus there are so many other aspects that make wrestling great: memorable entrances, hot crowd, big finish.
Like Tets above, I may favor this over the Other matchup I’ve seen and loved.

Loved this to bits. Excellent matwork building to a hot finish is what I was hoping for going in, was not disappointed. Santo built to the dives in the third fall so well, every time Espanto would go outside he'd check, and... no not yet. It really gave them impact when they finally came. I really wish wrestlers would do this nowadays. The crowd and their impromptu ring invasions were also great. I'd have it lower on my list than the 86 match, just because I think there are better Santo matches of this type whereas the 86 brawl really stands apart. But a brilliant match in its own right.

Finally watched it. Absolutely loved it and think it might make the back quarter of my list this year. I'll also stand by the 86 match as clearly superior (for me), but they are almost apples and oranges really. Truly worthwhile stuff.

Cap I think that is where I landed ultimately, the 86 match was in the top 3rd or so and then this was in the back half. Glad you watched and enjoyed, it was a revelation for sure.
