2018 might have a surprising number of matches to really consider for this project. It has been a great year for wrestling. This is one of my absolute favorites, even though it doesn't get quite the buzz of some of the more high profile matches. This match has everything I want in my wrestling. It is stiff, thoughtful, violent, intense, high drama, and great chemistry. It features who I think is the best active wrestler in the world today and one of the most criminally undervalued wrestlers going at it in the friend v friend format. It isn't the first time this story is told, but it is one of the best to me. If you dropped someone into the middle of this they might assume Thatcher and Walter are bitter enemies. I rate this very highly in terms of intensity, drama, and escalation. I would also say this is probably my favorite indy match in at least 2-3 years and my top Progress match. Given their place in wrestling, I think any match in that conversation deserves a shot.

Walter vs Timothy Thatcher (Atlas Title – 1/28/2018)
Current Rank 96
Trending: Even
Walter has been – to my mind – the best wrestler in the world over the past two years or so. His floor is so high, but this is the closest he has come to putting on an all timer. For his part, Thatcher is, even in the midst of many fans rediscovering their appreciation for him, somewhat underrated. Both men shine here and produce something that feels like it will stand the test of time. That said, there is really no way to know if that is true, so there is a certain cap on it. I can’t see this climbing any higher. This last 5-10 spots – where some spots will be reserved for matches and/or wrestlers near and dear to my heart – seems about where it belongs. This is a great, hard hitting match that doesn’t let itself get tempted into excess while still providing plenty of action to sink your teeth into. Two professionals are in there plying their trade and telling their story through their chosen form. They make a match that will contend for one of my personal favorite spots and I think has a really good chance of winning one.

Update: After a few more rewatch rounds and digging into some new styles (for me) and matches I hadn't seen I am not sure it is going to be able to maintain its spot. It will still be in the conversation and I still really think it deserves a nomination, but its on the outside looking in now.
