Johnny Valentine vs Wild Bull Curry (Houston - 6/20/69) Earlier when I agreed with Cap about Race/Funk 77 being the best match I saw on NWA Classics, I made a mistake. THIS is the best match on NWA Classics. THIS is one of the best matches ever and one of my absolute favorites. I had seen clips of Johnny Valentine but this made me buy ALL of the hype around him you hear from old timers. This is a fucking incredible performance. His selling, timing, and facial expressions are sheer perfection. The build to the climax in this is out of this world as this starts slow and then all of the sudden it hits you "HOLY FUCK GREATEST SHIT EVER." Valentine bleeds a gusher in this as well to satiate your vampiric desires. Seriously. THIS Fucking match. I could absolutely see myself going nuts and ranking this in the top 10. Johnny Valentine motherfuckers. The hype is real. What was that old Lou Thesz Story? Valentine punched a charging bull in the face or some shit and it staggered away? I believe it.

Second
I agree this is great and that it is must be considered. I will hold off on saying that it is an all timer on my list. I don't have it that high. It is 100% a shining example of what Valentine was capable of. He certainly stands out and this match has the violence and nuance in abundance. I love the pace. I love the finish. I will need to give this one another watch and put it up against some stuff from the era.

Third.
I definitely recommend this match. I'm really happy that I finally got to see a Johnny Valentine match and in incredible quality as well. This also shows the stories of Valentine being slow and methodical until ratcheting up the violence and pace later on in the match. He hits a pretty nasty gusher in this as well. The finish with them just brawling and Curry just clobbering anyone and everyone in his way was great. Both guys should be on a Mt. Rushmore of stone faces of wrestling.

Just watched this. I'm wary of recency bias, but there's no question that Johnny Valentine is tremendous in this match and I liked this a whole lot. Definitely on my radar now for consideration.

This was a fun match to watch with Valentine looking fantastic here. A slow burn start with Valentine using holds to gain the advantage of Curry, but this works to build the story that Valentine will have to use wrestling if he wants to defeat Curry. Some nice brawling and selling from Valentine when they start to go to blows. A very good match, but I don't see myself ranking it as a top tier match that would go on my 100 list. Who knows though, it's early in the project.
One thing I will need to consider is that this match is from 50 years ago and still holds up very well.

This was tremendous. Simple, stiff, believable. Props to the commentary, it was excellent and really helped get you get acclimatised the pro-wrestling wrestling logic of the match.
Maybe I'm biased because this is the first time I've ever seen Wild Bull Curry and it's love at first sight, but this is up there with matches like Satanico/Dandy and Piper/Valentine as one of my favourite characterful, bloody revenge brawls.

Dug this a lot but not *quite* transcendent enough to make my list. A really solid, heated brawl that makes me want to see a lot more of Curry. I've rarely seen a Valentine match that didn't make me wince appreciatively.

This felt like a prototype for later classics from Memphis. Bull Curry is very popular with the fans and every time he gets some punches in they go wild. Valentine is the star here though, his selling his great. The match is most memorable for the final fall, where Curry attacks a bloodied Valentine before he can even get to his feet and the two men just start walloping each other as the crowd goes crazy. Damn fun brawl.

Fantastic brawl. They feel each other out in the first fall. Curry throws a lot of punches and Valentine does his best to control him and eventually rolls him up for a pinfall. Curry cranks up the punches in the second fall and busts open Valentine who eventually cannot answer the refereeās count, giving Curry the second fall. In the third fall they brawl around the ring and spill outside and the referee calls it. Great stuff.

Johnny Valentine is exactly the wrestler all the old wrestlers promised. Totally lives up to the hype. I wish we had like 50 more matches

Just watching this match and these two guys for the first time. And it's great and they're great.
First two falls were perfect with Valentine working an effective strategy of containment and keep away in the first, then getting cocky and thinking he can go toe to toe with Bull in the second (and boy does he pay for that).
Would have loved this to have gone a bit longer and not go straight to the breakdown in the third fall. But that's being a bit greedy I guess, what we got was tremendous.
