This is a fantastic match, but I've never been completely blown away by this as I have by most of the top-tier matches. This crept into my bottom 25 last year, but I think that this might miss my ballot this year as I've consumed so much incredible wrestling over the last year.
What a bloodbath! Thus is joshi for people who don't like joshi. They don't make this a sprint and build-up to the next moment and take the time to let the story unfold. Hokuto gets cut deep after taking a brutal piledriver on the table and she rocks the crimson mask better than Ric Flair and it makes for an absolutely disgusting visual. Kandori is a massive bully here and wants to rip Hokuto's arm off. Hokuto was excellent as the babyface fight from underneath. That springboard dive that she lands during the finishing stretch was something else, it reeked of desperation as Hokuto sends herself violently tumbling into Kandori. I thought the finish felt a bit flat, but this might be one of the best joshi matches of the '90s. ★★★★½

I was watching the press conference for this show (I don't speak Japanese but I'm picking stuff up....) where Chigusa Nagayo and Devil Masami are hyping their match by talking about their "best bout" at Budokan Hall when it suddenly occured to me.... The finish of this match is a homage to Chigusa vs. Devil 08/22/85 isn't it? It's exactly the same sequence except this time the hero just about manages to make the cover. Rewatching after seeing a fair bit of 80s joshi, I saw parallels with the start of this match and the finish to the '88 Chigusa v Asuka match where a young Hokuto is seconding Chigusa. Or is this sort of thing more common than I realise in this era? Anyhow, I think this is still my #1. One thing I really enjoyed this time around was how Kandori would maneuver Hokuto into her submissions. Looked so rough, like she was putting these on whether Hokuto wanted to or not.

I made a fun project for myself this year of watching everything I hadn't seen on the Cagematch top 100 list, and this was my favorite new match from the bunch. Easy top 20.

I'm always jealous of people watching this for the first time. It is the GOAT.

This match was too hyped for me. It didn’t click for years just how good this match was. I think it took watching a lot more wrestling in general, as well as more Hokuto & Kandori separately.
Wrestling doesn’t get much better than this. I’m also aware a handful of people say the 12/6/93 match is even better. It’s not far off. Don’t sleep on that one either.

Yeah, I really encourage folks to go check that one out as well. I rewatched it the other day. It won't jump this match for me, but it is on my list. I will say, I think I prefer the finish of 12/6. They both rule.

Some classic matches build throughout whereas here, they push each other to the limit early on and then try to survive. The tombstone on the table is a classic spot and then the rest is like a classic moves vs holds match. The blood adds so much drama. One oft the greatest matches of all time.
