I voted this #47 this year.
For a match like this that's actually lower than the consensus here, but every match in my top 50 I'd consider a '5 star match' (whatever that is). I first saw this years ago and found it ...boring actually. I didn't get into it at all and I ended skipping a bit to get to the finish, which I didn't like. And for years wrote this off as an outright bad match, weirdly overhyped.
Tastes change I guess. I was pretty low on Hokuto in general for quite a while. Then I watched this a few years back and kinda got the hype on an intellectual level at least - I could see why people thought this was a great match and would probably assent that that's what it was, but it still wasn't something I especially loved personally. It took a third look (for the sake of this project) for it to finally melt my cold heart and win me round fully. Like Cap says way higher in this thread, it's a physically exhausting match to watch. I got immersed in it and kinda felt like I was coming up gasping for air when it finished. A brutal, truly gripping spectacle.

I'm introducing a friend to joshi and watched this match with him today. He really liked it, and he's looking forward to more Hokuto & Kandori stuff (I'm planning on guiding him to Queendom). I'm sure he will like it even more on a rewatch someday, when he already knows what to expect and can appreciate some subtle details. It is indeed one of the absolute greatest matches of all time.

I watched this match in its entirety for the first time yesterday. Yep, that's a classic. I would like to address this earlier comment of mine regarding this match. I view this match as a gem, but I'm not sure if I view it as top-50, to be honest. I think KENTA/Kotaro Suzuki is a better match, for example.

I should have stated that KENTA/Kotaro is in no way related to the Kandori/Hokuto match. I am just very high on the Kotaro match as it surprised away with how good it was. So, I have a habit of using it as a measuring stick when reviewing wrestling matches, for some reason.
