From my rewatch project...
Eddie Kingston vs Chris Hero (Last Man Standing – IWA-MS – 9/29/2007) Current Rank: 90 Trending: Even/Down So I must admit, IWA-MS is generally a blind spot for me. Even when I was in my peak indie watching phase (around the time of this match honestly) I wasn’t watching a ton of IWA-MS. In turn, I watched this match for the first time recently for this project. I went in with kind of eh expectations. I have found some of Hero’s stuff from this period to be a bit overrated (very very good, just not all timers). I was happy to see this exceed all my wildest expectations. This match is shades of Super Dragon vs Necro Butcher with a more theatrical drama to it (one man wasn’t concussed the whole time, so that helps). It feels like the high point of 2000’s indie brawls to me. The outside work is incredible as they feel genuinely unhinged at points, like they might be straddling the line of what is ok and safe, but it is when they get back in the ring that this picks up. Here is where I want to take a moment to appreciate Eddie Kingston, who’s trash talk during the match helped make everything better. It held the hatred together, like a vulgar glue. The anger and hatred are almost palpable as it elevates, breaking through and overshadowing somewhat contrived offense in places that would normally take me out of a match like this just enough to knock it from this sort of pedestal. Of my additions so far, this match clearly falls near the bottom of the list for me and there is little reason to think that will change. However, I would also be somewhat shocked I the match fell from the list all together. This has a lot going for it. It is versatile, heated, and violent. It has a compelling story, engaging action, and strong visuals. This really is a gem from the mid 2000s that I think you can hold up against some of the all-time brawls and it wouldn’t feel out of place. I also think it holds up next to some of these matches on this list, matches that may be more generally touted or feature wrestlers more commonly associated with greatness. Even still, it can’t go too far down without falling off the list, but if it goes anywhere, its probably that direction. Slobberknocker which is elevated by lines like "gimme your eyes", one of the most nonchalantly disturbing things ever uttered in a wrestling match. I'm a mark for a good headbutt, and there were some juicy ones here. Plus Hero throws a chair into the ring and it lands perfectly on Kingston's neck. This match also has the added comedy value of some guys listlessly chanting "stiff, stiff" after Kingston and Hero had spent the opening stretch beating the piss out of each other. I've rejigged my list too many times so this won't get on but Kingston is a gem and Hero ain't half bad either.

I actually re-watched this just over the weekend. It is a new addition to my list this year and I wanted to make sure it held up on second watch. Because he is sort of the buzz of the wrestling world since his AEW match, I would start with the notion that this is THE Kingston match I would rec to people who want to understand why I like him so much. I think hero is great in it, but Kingston brings so much personality. This is visceral wrestling at its best spiced with some 2000s indie experimentation and I absolutely love it.

Eddie Kingston vs Chris Hero (Last Man Standing – IWA-MS – 9/29/2007) Current Rank: 83 Trending: Up I don’t care if the thread for this match is just me talking about how great it is once a year. It deserves at least that. I threw it on this morning because Eddie Kingston has been having a hell of a run in AEW and I recently stumbled upon some hype for his big match against Quack in Chikara. That – I think – is heralded as his masterpiece, but I have always thought this blew it out of the water. This match has also been slipping UP my list a bit. More than anything it is because as I move matches down I have asked myself more than once if they are better than this match, so a quick calibration couldn’t hurt. I think I came away higher on it today than I have ever been. I didn’t appreciate before how Hero used his length and plunder to keep the distance through much of the match. That layer of the story really clicked for me here. It made every time he got close enough to Kingston to go in for the kill (and subsequently paid for it) or Kingston closed the distance fast that much more compelling. The trash talk in this is great from both men. The hand work, the stiffness.... I love it all. This is genuinely all-time stuff and I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen it to get on it.

Yeah, this ruled so hard! I'm gonna have to find a way to see if I can get this on my list. Everything that was written about in this, I agree. One hell of a match that I didn't know even existed until this thread and I was an IWA Mid-South fan but I wasn't watching as closely during this time period. I really want to do a deeper dive and rewatch a lot of the 2000s indies stuff. I haven't really watched a lot of it since it happened.

Most of what I liked about this is called out above: the trash talk and the hand work, and the overall sense of hatred. This whole period and style is a blind spot for me, but I get the hype around Kingston for sure.
I will say that within the opening moments I could see that this is a cap favorite:)

Should've ended after the first 5 minutes. But it doesn't.
