197. Dustin Rhodes vs Cody (AEW - 5/25/2019) Total Points: 123 # of Ballots: 2 High Vote: Cactus – 28
Love this match and considered it again this year. Didn’t make the cut for me, but I’ll probably give it another shot again in the future. If you haven’t listened to the Way of the Blade podcast with Phil Schneider on this match you really should. He did a great interview with Dustin about the match. Fantastic stuff.
195-T. Akira Hokuto vs Manami Toyota (AJW – 9/2/1995) Total Points: 126 # of Ballots: 4 High Vote: Cap – 65
I was just talking about this match the other day when trying to explain 90s joshi to a friend of mine who is just getting into wrestling a bit. Then I saw Elliott posted on the thread. Maybe it is a sign I should watch it again soon. Maybe it is a sign you should all watch it and vote for it. Who’s to say?!
177-T. Daniel Bryan vs Brock Lesnar (WWE – 11/18/2018) Total Points: 135 # of Ballots: 5 High Vote: Cactus – 37
I love that this match is getting this much love, but I am a little surprised. I don’t necessarily think it is undeserving. It was more or less my dream match for years and it basically lived up to the hype, but I still could only give it the 100 spot. It also just shows me that they have something even better in them. The match itself was amazing, but the home stretch made me feel like they left a little on the table for later (just in case).
174. CM Punk vs. Eddie Kingston (AEW - 11/13/2021) Total Points: 139 # of Ballots: 4 High Vote: Darrenn – 45
This has been talked about a lot lately. It is all the buzz. I do love the match and 4 votes for something that came out the month of the project is very impressive. I’ll be interested to see how it ages. Both men are on really interesting in-ring streaks at the moment, so it is quite possible that this match ages well. It was also the product of a super hot (albeit compact) build, so it seems equally possible that opinions wane a bit.
172. Super Dragon vs Necro Butcher (PWG – 9/2/2006) Total Points: 142 # of Ballots: 4 High Vote: Bossrock – 39
Nice little jump for one of my favorite matches ever. From 236 to 172. I moved it up slightly on my list, but not a ton, not enough to account for this. If we do a “favorites” mini project in 2022 this match is going to rate really highly for me. Super Dragon attempting to murder necro near the end of this match is all time wrestling violence.
165-T. El Satanico vs Gran Cochise (EMLL – 9/14/1984) Total Points: 148 # of Ballots: 2 High Vote: Cap – 24
Big drop for this match. This was 88 last year. I’m pretty surprised this only got onto 2 ballots. I’ve always thought of this as an all time classic and a highly praised match. My love and admiration for this match was reinforced on my (admittedly exhausting) top 30 rewatch before the ballot. Great stuff.
152 - Antonio Inoki vs Billy Robinson (NJPW - 12/11/1975) Total Points: 167 # of Ballots: 3 High Vote: Tetsujin – 18
I need to rewatch this. I went on an Inoki kick not long and wound up developing a love for Big Tony Inoki. I’ve always loved Robinson. I think I was also simultaneously cooling on longer matches (which I think is more a temporary thing and not particularly fair to the matches). I still came away liking this match a lot, so when my patience returns, I’ll check this out again.
144. El Hijo Del Santo vs Espanto Jr (EMLL – 8/31/1986) Total Points: 190 # of Ballots: 3 High Vote: Cap – 6
Another pretty big drop here. This was 68 in 2020, landing on 5 ballots and getting 311 points. That was with me voting it 18. It gained points from its greatest champion and still plummeted almost 80 spots. Crushing. It just wasn’t a great year for some heavy hitters of lucha. I know their other match got a little love this year and that is awesome, but this is one people need to get back on board with.
125. Sangre Chicana vs Perro Aguayo ( EMLL – 2/28/1986) Total Points: 227 # of Ballots: 4 High Vote: Cap – 16
Slight drop for this match (112 in 2020). Not as dramatic as some other big lucha matches, but still a little drop. I think Perro Aguayo is great here, but if you haven’t watch this match you should just to see the all time minimalist performance from Sangre Chicana.
121. Shinobu Kandori vs Yumiko Hotta (LLPW – 3/21/1998) Total Points: 237 # of Ballots: 4 High Vote: Gramsci – 6
Absolute monster rating from Gramsci. I love it. This jumps up a touch this year from 148 and I am here for the joshi love and particularly the love of this match.
119. Bryan Danielson vs Low Ki (ROH – 3/30/2002) Total Points: 240 # of Ballots: 5 High Vote: Cap – 7
This is the match I have thought the most about since submitting my ballot this year. There was a lot of shuffling at the top of my list. This, Santo/Espanto, and Fujiwara/Takada moved up substantially and a lot of the more generally agreed upon greats wound up taking their place in the teens for me. I am not 100% sure how I feel about that in the long run, but I feel confident that it reflects my taste at this moment. This is one I think people should give a close look (or another look) to if they haven’t recently. I’ll probably write about it at some point in the not too distant future, but the short story is it great escalation, tight shootesque grappling (that folks praise from the submission match), big high-impact spots that are earned, and ahead of its time creativity.
116-T. Naoki Sano vs Minoru Suzuki (PWFG – 7/26/1991) Total Points: 241 # of Ballots: 3 High Vote: Cap – 4
Last year I was crushed that I was the only person voting for this match. this year it moved up my list just a bit and got two more votes. I’ll take it! I’m ready to call this the best shoot-style match of all time. It isn’t the slickest. It isn’t the smoothest. It is the best though. It is gritty, visceral, violent, and exhausting. It is the kind of match that you can’t accurately describe without the word fuck. This match is fucking awesome top shelf greatness. I don’t care what anyone says.
115. Jerry Lawler vs Bill Dundee (CWA - 12/30/1985) Total Points: 244 # of Ballots: 4 High Vote: JKWebb – 16
I am more conflicted about this match than probably any other. It dropped off my list, but not because it isn’t great. The clipping just makes it so I can’t accurately evaluate it compared to other elite matches. This honestly might be top 10 if we had the whole thing, but as it stands now, it will probably remain off my list.
113. Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Nobuhiko Takada (UWFi – 10/25/1990) Total Points: 251 # of Ballots: 3 High Vote: Cap – 5
Holy shit. This falling out of the top 100 sucks. This was 55 last year! It did well for landing on hal as many ballots as last year, but still. Even still… come on… this needs more love.
108. Team ROH vs. Team CZW (ROH - 7/15/2006) Total Points: 267 # of Ballots: 6 High Vote: EnviousStupid – 8
I really need to rewatch this match. I probably haven’t since 2006 and it feels like something I would love even more in 202.
104. Kenta Kobashi vs Yoshihiro Takayama (AJPW – 5/26/2000) Total Points: 282 # of Ballots: 6 High Vote: Gramsci - 12
Up substantially from last year (249 to 104). Would have been nice to see this make the top 100, but still a good move for a truly great match. I’m one of the few who prefers this to the NOAH match, but both are all timers. Glad this had a good showing.

243-T. Dump Matsumoto vs Itsuki Yamazaki (AJW - 8/21/1986) Total Points: 95 # of Ballots: 1 High Vote: Elliott - 6
With Dump vs Ohmori jumping into the top 100 (Woohoo!) I think this is the match everyone should watch next. It has a similar out of control chaotic dangerous violent feel to it while having the most distinct face/heel divide in history. The skinny, exciting flashy wrestler vs the big bad heel. YOu could show this to anyone without telling them anything about the wrestlers and they'd immediately understand everything they need to know about the match to appreciate it.
Bonafide stone cold classic everyone should make it a point to watch/revisit.

Sure enough, elliott came on strong in the back half to overtake me by a hair as the sole voter for the most matches. I counted 35 for him and 34 for me. However, I couldn't find two of the matches I voted for (Takayama/Suzuki vs. Nagata/Yamamoto and Hart Foundation vs. Killer Bees) on the list. I'd be shocked (albeit overjoyed) if either made the top 100, so I think there might have been a tabulating error.

195-T. Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Hiromitsu Kanehara (Kingdom - 12/2/1997)
Total Points: 126
# of Ballots: 2
High Vote: Control21 - 37
I thought this would finish higher. Might be one of the more underrated matches in history? Damn, what a fight.
193-T. Kazuchika Okada vs Kota Ibushi (NJPW - 1/4/2020)
Total Points: 127
# of Ballots: 2
High Vote: Kas - 17
Good to see I wasn't the only one that voted for this. I thought it was spectacular despite the modern indulgences.
177-T. Antonio Inoki vs. Jack Brisco (JWA - 8/5/1971)
Total Points: 135
# of Ballots: 2
High Vote: Superstar Sleeze - 27
This was high-level matwork decades before we saw it more often, it almost reminded me of Tamura vs Han at times. I think I'll need to push for this match harder next time.
143. AJ Styles vs Minoru Suzuki (NJPW - 8/1/2014)
Total Points: 191
# of Ballots: 3
High Vote: NintendoLogic - 31
Almost voted for this match. Sano vs Suzuki as well. I regret not putting them on my ballot now. It was close though.
136. Yuki Ishikawa vs Carl Greco (Battlarts - 6/1/2008)
Total Points: 210
# of Ballots: 3
High Vote: Gramsci - 19
I was amazed at how good this was and still am. Maybe one of the best wrestling matches ever from a pure technical standpoint? It was like high-level RINGS stuff 10 years after the fact. Should be in the top 100 next time.
123. Volk Han vs Kiyoshi Tamura (RINGS – 9/25/1996)
Total Points: 234
# of Ballots: 4
High Vote: Control21-24
All three Han vs Tamura matches are ***** in my humble opinion, and all three deserve to be in the top 100. Going to push for this one too next time.
113. Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Nobuhiko Takada (UWFi – 10/25/1990)
Total Points: 251
# of Ballots: 3
High Vote: Cap - 5
Really good match, should also be in the top 100 next time.

Fixed. It was just a matter of whoever did that section missing a couple of matches as they move things from the exel sheet to the google dock. Doesn't seem indicative of anything larger, but if anyone notices a match they think should be on there but isn't, shoot me a message and I'll figure out the problem.

There are some really incredible matches in this latest drop. And you can see that’s there are some really high high votes, that is the type of thing that makes me think a match is worth seeking out. I guess these are all worth seeking out, but I guess I appreciate the advocacy. so it is going to be interesting going forward.

Shocked about how many super well regarded matches didn't make it this time. I have no idea how this year's list will look like, and that's super fun. More in detail thoughts about some of all these matches later, but man, there's a few of them I'm really surprised they're out of the top 100.

One of these years ROH-CZW will break into the top 100! Maybe I'll finally get around to rewatching it and be blown away. I agree though. It feels like something that is either A. aging well, B. getting a lot of renewed attention, or C. both.
Additionally, reading through KB8s responses, I'm not sure I realized how much overlap there was in the venn diagram of our wrestling tastes. I knew there was some, but its pretty substantial.

This is listed twice. Would that be 2 ballots (Bossrock, Cap) High Vote: Cap - 28, with points 192?
