Jumbo-Kerry Von Erich is another. Maybe it was because I was spoiled ahead of time with the surly asshole Jumbo who would stomp the shit out of you, but I just can't see anything beyond it being "pretty good".

A lot of the more over the top brawls that get hyped I don't appreciate. Joe vs Necro, Necro vs Super Dragon, Wotan vs Terry, Mankind vs Taker HIC. I appreciate the violence and the emotion, no doubt. but things that are just stupid like unprotected chair shots to the head, guys taking head first bumps on the floor, etc take me out of the match. I don't enjoy watching guys intentionally hurt one another in a work. If two guys bleed buckets and intentionally hurt each other in front of 100 people with no real back story or feud to support the escalation of violence its not for me. If a wrestler loses years off his career in a match, its not for me. To me those sort of matches are just better versions of outlaw garbage matches.

I kind of feel the same about that one. I like it a good bit, but it is not a top tier, elite match to me.

Along similar lines, it is now difficult for me to watch Misawa getting dropped on his head, knowing what happened to him down the line. there will be a lot of AJPW matches on my final list, most likely... but mostly matches from the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. One match from '95 is my likely #1. 2 matches from the '95 CC have a shot. One match from '98 might make the list. Other than that, it's hard to see too many post-'93 AJPW matches making my list. I used to love those '97 Misawa vs Kobashi matches. I can hardly watch them, now.

I was just watching the GHC Final between Misawa and Takayama and I almost turned it off the first time he got dropped on his head with a suplex.

There was a couple of years where I couldn't watch wrestling period after he passed. And its only been recently I've been able to go back and watch 90s AJPW or NOAH.

Hansen vs. Kawada 2/93. I guess it's fitting considering I am lower on brawls, Hansen and Kawada than most but this never clicked for me. Good selling and some memorable moments makes it standout from the rest but not something I'd consider great, let alone a classic.
Cena vs. Punk, 7/2011. Great heat and a nice angle but the match was the usual finisher exchange and kickout and submission reversal WWE main event style that people hate.
Tamura vs. Kohsaka, 6/98. Hurts me to say this considering I'm one of the bigger Tamura and shoot style fans in our circle but I don't think this would even make a Top 15/20 list for Tamura. Hurt by lack of narrative and relatively weak pacing. Prefer their 99 and 04 bouts.
Hansen vs. Andre 9/81 - Interesting concept but didn't really come together as a great match. Poor arm selling by Hansen.

Poor arm selling by Hansen. I totally agree on Cena-Punk. No doubt a great match and it was aided by an insanely hot crowd, but I've always felt that the criticisms regarding the NJPW main event style are pretty applicable here. Slow first half, super hot second half. I also don't think it's either guy's best match.

Sangre Chicana vs MS1 from 83. I haven't watched a lot of 80s lucha, or really lucha in general. With that said I don't get what makes this one of the all time great matches. A good match? Sure, absolutely. A top 100 of all time? Will probably be on my list. But on the same level as Austin vs Hart or 6/3/94 or Flair vs Steamboat, I just don't see that.

It has a chance of being at the bottom of my list, 'cause it's a great brawl and all, but I don't get that "GOATC feeling".

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about MS-1/Chicana. It's certainly a great match with some terrific selling and violent brawling. But it always loses me in the finishing stretch for some reason. I understand that both guys are exhausted and are having a hard time putting any offense together, but it just falls flat for me. The first two falls are great, but the last fall just never grabs me. Still possible it makes my list, but not a top-tier pick.

My biggest problems are with the segunda caĆda, actually. After that vicious beating, Chicana's comeback came extremely easy. The tercera was amazing, but I gotta say it feels to me more like the 'MS1 losing due to his confidence' story than the 'Chicana's amazing comeback' story: I feel MS1 rol became more important to the story than Chicana's, in contrast to the match intention. But that's a minor issue.
It's funny, 'cause I think this match is the only one that could challenge 6/9/95 for the #1 spot in the final list (and maybe Clash VI).

I don't like the Funk/Lawler Empty Arena match as much as most people do. I think it is great, but I prefer their No DQ match. I think it was a great Funk performance, but I just wasn't feeling Lawler in that setting for some reason. I think so much of Lawler's appeal in Memphis is how ape shit the crowd goes for him just punching a dude. In turn, with that crowd there I felt flat on him in the match I think.

Magnum - Tully was mentioned in the very first post and that's my big pick for this, it's like a 4 star match to me. Basically all highly regarded shoot style matches, I just cannot get big into the style Another thing I don't get is when people talk about the CM Punk - Samoa Joe trilogy as if all the matches are great. One of them is great, one of them is fine, and one of them is an hour long snoozefest. Magnum-Tully is a great match. It is. Probably a MOTYC for '85, but might not even be a top 50 match for me. I'm not sure why. It's violent, it's bloody, has clear face-heel dynamic and good selling, it just never has the point where it really goes over the top for me. I've only seen the Punk-Joe 60-minute draw and while it's a great match, the first third of the match is a chore to sit through. I'm also not crazy about shoot style outside of some Ikeda matches.

For me, this is a match where I'm not just looking at the "bell to bell" stuff, I'm considering it as a whole. So all of Funk's prematch shit talking and post match "my eye my eye" ranting and raving is all part of it. Same thing with the post match of Savage/Warrior, WrestleWar or Kudo vs Toyoda or the outside the ring shenanigans in Bull/Aja. Certain things I just can't separate. Its a little different from something like the Lawler vs DUndee 83 LLT Hype Show a week before the match. I'm not considering that when I'm thinking about ranking Lalwer/Dundee. But Savage picking up Miss Elizabeth or Funk crying for help clutching his eye? Yeah, that shit counts.
